This paint was created by BoonieM aka Martijn van Boon (NL), who’s starting point were the two buildings behind the panels, which went up in flames in 2016 (about a year before creating the painting). This fire also made us think of the big city fire in 1603, which was another source of inspiration. Lastly, Martijn loosely based the painting on the iron foundry that was located here in 1856.
After the first day of painting the wooden wall was rearranged by construction workers, which forced Martijn to rethink his design. After finishing the painting, the panels were taken down and rearranged another four times. Some panels were permanently removed and are still lost to this day. Eventually all that was left of his painting were three panels and a piece of wall.
