After eight loyal years, we say goodbye to popular Blind Wall ‘The Lion’

In 2016, Zenk One created a stunning lion on Picenistraat. Little did we know then that this mural would become an icon and familiar recognition point for many. Unfortunately, the mural is now disappearing due to necessary renovations.

We strive to keep a mural as long as possible, but street art is never permanent. There can be various reasons for this, for example a new property owner with a different vision, the disappearance of a building or as in this case: a wall in need of renovation.

Eight years ago, illustrator Zenk One was commissioned to create a tribute to Godevaert Montens. Montens was mayor of Breda during the Eighty Years’ War and is known for his heroic actions during the Furie van Haultepenne. Together with a civilian army, he bravely resisted Spanish troops. Zenk One depicted this story in a special way. The lion, surrounded by warriors and a bull, soon became a public favourite.

During our tours, ‘The Lion’ was always a big hit. We see this online as well: it’s the most frequently visited web page. After we announced the goodbyes, comments flooded in. “We enjoyed this one so much, so beautiful, such a great story is incorporated in it! Glad the wall lasted as long as it did,” someone wrote. Another commented, “Especially my grandchildren are going to miss it. Such a beautiful landmark. Hopefully there will be a nice new mural after the renovation.”

The responses are heartwarming and it’s nice to read how much impact one mural can make. Saying goodbye is unfortunate, but the temporary aspect also has its charm. After all, street art remains impermanent.

Future
Last Sunday, we handed out postcards of the mural and enthusiasts came to say their farewells. Property owner Wim is also sad to see the mural disappear. For now, we cannot say anything about a new Blind Wall at this spot, but Wim and we are certainly open to a new project. As for ‘The Lion’, luckily we still have the photos!
