Youth from Brabantpark create painting about and for the neighbourhood

Article |

We invited local artist Bas Steens to create a mural with ten youth from the Brabantpark neighbourhood. Bas gathered the inspiration for the design from creative workshops, in which participants painted a denim jacket.

Through an earlier project, we came into contact with youth workers from Surplus and so the idea was born to create a mural in the Elandstraat youth centre. We organised workshops where young people were given the task of painting a denim jacket. On the back of the coat, they showed what they like and find important in the neighbourhood.

We all carry a part of our identity, culture and community with us. The coat symbolises ‘carrying something’. Based on these painted coats, Bas created a composition and design. The coats with the young people’s designs are reflected in it. In the colourful whole, you can also read the sentence ‘Together we carry the neighbourhood and the neighbourhood carries us’. This feeling immediately came to the fore during the workshops, so the sentence deserved a prominent place.

The mural can be found in the Youth Centre at Elandstraat 10. This project was made possible by the Municipality of Breda, WonenBreburg and Surplus.
