The mural is dedicated to the Koepelgevangenis Breda, an iconic building with a rich and layered history. The former prison, built according to the panopticon principle, revolved around visibility, control and the separation between the inside and the outside world. For decades, it was a place where freedom and restriction literally stood opposite each other.

Over the years, various remarkable events have taken place within – and surprisingly, also outside – these walls. One of the better-known stories is that of Hulda ‘Tottie’ Kiel, who managed to escape in 2010 via a crawl space beneath the building. Her story is part of a longer history of attempts to escape from this place – including escapes in 2002 and a major breakout by seven war criminals in 1952.

About the artist

Buuf Buur

Julia Buur works under the name Buuf Buur and creates disorienting landscapes and architectural compositions. Her work is influenced by street art and comic books and is characterized by complex, layered structures.

It is striking that humans are often absent from her work. Instead, the focus lies on the environment: spaces that confuse, challenge, and invite interpretation. With this mural, she takes a step towards large-scale work in public space.

She was one of the five selected participants of the Blind Walls Talent Call 2025.
