This Blind Wall can be found on the back of a power house in the Mertersem Park, in Princenhage. In 1261 the existing church community ‘Mertersem’ became an independent parish dedicated to ‘Sint Maarten’ (the holy Saint Martin).

We celebrate Sint Maarten every year on November 11, the day he was buried. That day also used to be the day when the last harvest was brought in and the cattle were brought inside for the rest of the winter.

During the St. Martin’s feast, children with lanterns or hollowed out turnips, sugar beets and gourds with a candle went by the door for candy and fruit.
