‘Maria Hemelvaart Church’

When we asked the owner of this house (Annie van Gils) what she thought should be on her wall, her answer was: “the Maria Hemelvaart church has to return!” Annie has lived in this place all her life and has a lot of special stories about this area. One of those is about the Maria Hemelvaart church, which she visited regularly as a little girl.

We invited Isakov (UA) to fulfil Annie’s wish. He created a design inspired by the Maria Hemelvaart church, which was built at the end of the 19th century, where the Houtmarkt passage is situated now. The church was designed by Juriën van Langelaar and is considered his best design. The church closed in the sixties and eventually demolished, despite local residents protesting against it.

Alexander Isakov has been making murals since 2013. He’s inspired by the relation between architecture and ornamentation. Delicate patterns, architectural structures and accent colours add character to his work. Various architectural styles throughout history, such as battlements, towers, composition and constructions of old masters are what drives him artistically. He combines these elements into something new, fictional and utopian.
