Since the 13th century, the building of today’s Stedelijk Museum Breda has seen many interpretations, including as a pilgrims’ residence, a madhouse or an old men’s home.
Some stayed a few nights, others lived here for years. One resident has rooted in the courtyard for centuries: a walnut tree. It watched the building and residents change, provided a shady meeting place and fed residents with its nuts in autumn.
In 1934, this walnut tree gave way to a sundial. Artist Isamo Thissen (1998) returns the tree to the courtyard in a contemporary guise. Its transparent presence now colours the courtyard and entrance in all seasons.
