“I just wanted to draw dinosaurs.”
Mans is a visual artist who works across multiple disciplines, with a focus on illustration and animation. Visually, his work blends surrealism, absurdity, spatiality, and playfulness. He draws inspiration from history, theology, biology, music, psychology, art, and many other more specific themes. In developing his work, he experiments with characters and the worlds they inhabit. By distorting spatial elements, he seeks to create dynamic imagery.
“You could say that something has been ‘unearthed,’ a rediscovery of spontaneity and enthusiasm. Alongside that, the ‘exposure’ of perfectionism and self-criticism. When is something ‘good enough’? Is it allowed to simply emerge, without weighty themes and big questions? Or is the creation of an image inevitably tied to those big questions? Finally, a ‘re-appreciation’ of the creative process, in which the questions and confrontations still arise. In any case, I wanted to do something I felt like doing—that was the goal. I just wanted to draw dinosaurs, nothing more than that.”
