This Blind Wall can be found at the Stedelijk Gymnasium Breda. Two project groups of a total of ten students started a research to determine the theme of this mural. Based on this research, the students created their own designs for the mural, which together with their research (after some additions from Blind Walls Gallery) inspired the design by Czech illustrator Patrik Antczak.
The main inspiration came from Eduard Hendrik Antonius Guljé, who was mayor of Breda from 1893 to 1907. Under his leadership, water pipes, streetcar lines and a telephone network were built in Breda. He was also responsible for the construction of the Markkanaal, Nassaukanaal, Wilhelminakanaal and Wilhelminapark. During this period, Breda got significantly greened and modernized.
The design also contains all sorts of references to Dutch and Czech people and elements.
This project is supported by Stedelijk Gymnasium Breda and the Czech Center. Earlier, Breda artist Rutger Termohlen traveled to the Czech city of Pilsen to create a mural there. That exchange and Patrik’s mural fall under the same project, which takes place during this period because the Czech Republic currently holds the presidency of the European Union.
